Overview
CIOs have been guiding their organisations through a very difficult period over the past two years as the global pandemic and economic uncertainty in Australia and overseas due to geopolitical tensions and rising inflation impacts business operations.
Technology chiefs have answered the call, delivering technologies, often cloud-based solutions, that support new working environments for fast-changing workforces. Moreover, CIOs are being asked by their boards to play an even bigger role in driving business strategy.
2023 will be a challenging year for tech leaders that are looking to retire technology debt, build on innovations introduced during the pandemic, and secure their infrastructure to protect against potentially damaging cyber-attacks.

- Australian tech leaders discuss their plans for 2023(CIO Sit-Down) The past three years have been tough for technology leaders. In 2020, tech teams scrambled to support workers forced out of the office environment and into their homes due to the pandemic, some organisations put the brakes on their transformation plans due to economic uncertainty while others delivered tech projects with more urgency than ever before. Join Sit-Down’s Director of Research & Production, Byron Connolly, as he chats to three technology, data, and cyber leaders about their technology objectives for 2023. Panelists will discuss: - The technology and business lessons they have learned over the past few years and how they will apply those learnings in 2023. - The technology and digital projects their teams will be working on this year and what is driving these initiatives. - Their plans to deal with important issues such as the ongoing technology skills shortage, cost pressures across their organisations and increasing cyber threats.
- Executing a cost-effective data & AI strategy in a bear market.(CIO Sit-Down) A bear in the wild swipes its paws in a downward motion to claim its prey. With the current downturn, how do we make the most of the economic conditions? This presentation provides three approaches for overcoming implementation risks when advancing an AI strategy in a bearish environment. Bringing our experience working on the front lines of global enterprise AI initiatives, Vicent will explore cost-reduction use cases and identify best practices for optimising data and AI resources.
- Morning tea and networking break(CIO Sit-Down)
- Fireside Chat: How MYOB improved efficiencies and reduced costs with unified software support(CIO Sit-Down) MYOB has been part of the fabric of doing business in Australia and New Zealand for more than 30 years. One of the side effects of this success is a mix of modern and legacy technologies including an ageing ERP. Solving for the difficulties in finding specialists in the marketplace, the desire to focus in house talent on the go forward technologies and the support from Oracle proving too costly for the level of service required. Join Sit-Down’s Director of Research & Production, Byron Connolly, as he chats to MYOB’s Platform Lead, Catherine Quinn, and Engineering Manager, Stefan Vargheese, about how engaging with third-party Unified software support provider , Rimini Street, has helped the organisation overcome these issues. Panelists will discuss: 1. Why the ERP support process was becoming unsuitable for the organisation. 2. How third-party support helps to improve efficiencies and reduced costs. 3. How MYOB is reinvesting these savings back into the business.
- A CIO's journey: Key learnings from digital transformational use cases across different organisations(CIO Sit-Down) During this session, Peter Carrodus, Asia-Pacific chief information officer at ITW Construction Products will dive into what digital transformation looks like across enterprises of different sizes and how they fit into each company’s strategic roadmap. He will discuss how to take a ‘staggered approach’ to transformation, covering where to start, the ‘nice to have’ technologies, as well as the solutions that may not be required early in the digitisation journey.
- Digital Transformation in a Turbulent Economy(CIO Sit-Down) Digital transformation continues to top IT Leaders’ agenda for 2023, but how do you achieve ‘more for less’ amidst a biting recession and ever-decreasing IT budgets? Nitro Software presents a customer success story, The Mace Group, where they achieved the seemingly impossible; reduced cost, maximized user productivity and minimized the impact of change.
- Digital innovation vs security: The paradoxical effect of securing IT environments while driving value through innovation(CIO Sit-Down) Security may be the number one priority for many CIOs in 2023. While securing critical data is important, CIOs must also continue driving value through transformation and innovation. Newpath’s Chief Innovation Officer, Ben Dexter, will offer insights into how enterprises are tackling security governance without inhibiting advancements.
- Lunch break and networking(CIO Sit-Down)
- Building a recession proof workforce- Tech Forecast 2023 report.(CIO Sit-Down)
- The Victorian government’s great data purge(CIO Sit-Down) The Victorian government is in the throes of a ‘data purge.’ Some of the data collected during the COVID pandemic, for instance, is no longer needed. It’s quite the culture change across the Victorian public service where staff have historically been instructed to never delete a record. During this session, Shane Moffitt, deputy chief information security officer at the Department of Premier and Cabinet Victoria will discuss how the government is identifying and removing data that no longer has value as well as IT systems that are end of life. Both activities will help to reduce the risk of departments falling victim to cyber-attacks. Join the session to gain insights into: How the purge will help improve cyber safety for 340,000 Victorian government staff and citizens across the state. The most important questions you need to ask before deciding whether or not to invest in protecting certain data sets. How CISOs can increase their influence by doing a better job of identifying the cyber risks associated with any investment in new technologies.
- The keys to creating the right cyber culture(CIO Sit-Down) La Trobe University’s Chief Information Security Officer, Andrew Morgan, believes that creating a good cyber culture at an organisation is not just about rolling out an education and awareness program. It is also about having teams across the entire organisation better understand each other’s business objectives. Join Andrew at the CISO Sit-Down as he discusses why CISOs and their cyber teams need to move beyond just implementing cyber strategies and dealing with threats and start learning more about what their organisations are trying to achieve. Of course, colleagues in other departments across an enterprise should reciprocate and make time to understand how the cyber team works too. This shared understanding will help to create the right cyber culture. Andrew will cover: How he is creating a cyber culture at La Trobe where each team understands the objectives of their counterparts in other departments. Why conversations should cover people and processes and not just cyber security technology strategy. How having a healthy culture can help any organisation better deal with and respond to a damaging data breach
- The ethics of AI: How carsales avoids crossing the ‘creepy line’(CIO Sit-Down) carsales, a global leader in digital marketplaces, has been a pioneer in the deployment of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to improve the customer experience. AI’s ability to think like a human and assess the threat or opportunity to deliver a decision with minimal fuss means that these technologies are providing real value to the organisation. But what are the ethical questions that carsales asks when using these technologies to make buying and selling a great experience for its customers around the world? Join Sit-Down’s Director of Research and Production, Byron Connolly, as he chats to carsales’ Chief Information Officer, Jason Blackman, about how the organisation avoids crossing the creepy line when unleashing automation technologies. They will discuss: How carsales can make its recommendation engine so good that it can scare customers, and how the team makes sure that those fears are alleviated. Ethical questions that need to be answered to ensure that the company doesn’t cross an automation ‘creepy line.’ Why carsales’ mantra is to play it safe with automation technologies - just because something can be done technically, doesn’t mean it should be done.
- End of day and closing remarks(CIO Sit-Down)
- Networking drinks(CIO Sit-Down)
