CDO ANZ Series - February Edition 2023
Data is always at the centre of your innovation activities
Crown Sydney
Hosted by Factor
- 500 attendees
- 27000 hours
Overview
A good transformation program will not succeed without good data. It is incumbent on chief digital officers to convince the executive and the board to invest in improving data quality. If your data is not up to scratch, your employees and customers will have bad experiences when they interact with your applications and services. Bad data will impact your organisation’s ability to compete in the marketplace and drive your customers away.
Join CDO Sit-Down in February as we explore:
- Why ensuring data is of the highest quality and employing good data management practices helps build trust with customers, better manage risk, and improve the services you provide to customers.
- A business-first data governance approach that connects key initiatives and governance capabilities and delivers long-term business value.
- Why organisations need to rethink the structure of their data teams, their roles and responsibilities and skillsets that are required.
- Assessing what a fit for purpose data strategy looks like and designing the roadmap measurement points that are needed to achieve business objectives.

- Welcome address & introduction by Sit-Down
- Data Integrity: From speed dating to lifelong partnership(Sit-Down) Governance has little to do with governance…it’s about delivering and demonstrating value. It’s one thing for your colleagues to intellectually believe in the value of data, good data, and governed data, but it’s another thing entirely to have them emotionally engaged and excited to be involved. Shaun will share his thoughts and experience on approaches to win over reluctant leaders and business teams and describe the key components of successful programs.
- Australian tech leaders discuss their plans for 2023(Sit-Down) The past three years have been tough for technology leaders. In 2020, tech teams scrambled to support workers forced out of the office environment and into their homes due to the pandemic, some organisations put the brakes on their transformation plans due to economic uncertainty while others delivered tech projects with more urgency than ever before. Join Sit-Down’s Director of Research & Production, Byron Connolly, as he chats to three technology, data, and cyber leaders about their technology objectives for 2023. Panelists will discuss: The technology and business lessons they have learned over the past few years and how they will apply those learnings in 2023. The technology and digital projects their teams will be working on this year and what is driving these initiatives. Their plans to deal with important issues such as the ongoing technology skills shortage, cost pressures across their organisations and increasing cyber threats.
- Executing a cost-effective data & AI strategy in a bear market(Sit-Down) A bear in the wild swipes its paws in a downward motion to claim its prey. With the current downturn, how do we make the most of the economic conditions? This presentation provides three approaches for overcoming implementation risks when advancing an AI strategy in a bearish environment. Bringing our experience working on the front lines of global enterprise AI initiatives, Colleen will explore cost-reduction use cases and identify best practices for optimising data and AI resources.
- Morning tea and networking break(Sit-Down)
- Fireside chat : How to Use Healthy Data to Achieve Business Outcomes(Sit-Down) In this interactive interview we will explore: How to define Data-as-an-Asset and what are the business outcomes organisations are looking for? How can IT play a positive role in making data consumable How can the CDO role add value in the broader spectrum of the business strategy How cultural change plays a role in the journey to data health
- Uplifting your data strategy to help customers and improve their financial wellbeing(Sit-Down) With 2023 around the corner and the economical implications, financial services organisations play a vital role in helping customers and ensuring the financial safety and wellbeing of those customers. And of course when we look at business models and how our infrastructure is set up to create a customer experience as such, one particular aspect is to clearly define the way we use our data assets to assess what our customers need and when they need it the most. During session we get together Lu Luc of Westpac to discuss the uplift of Westpac's data maturity to enable a better customer experience. Join us as we dive into: The effective use of data product teams as a part of your data strategy Defining what customers need at different times based on external factors Using data to ultimately create opportunities that help customers in a financial services organisation
- The New Value Exchange: Privacy & Innovation in a Global Digital Economy(Sit-Down) Today, data generates more economic value than the transnational flow of goods and services, presenting an untapped commercial opportunity for brands. Yet, harnessing the consumer-data opportunity requires prioritising privacy to protect profits and create competitive advantage. Amid heightening market volatility, a privacy-first commercial strategy provides a pathway to sustainable growth. In this session, Tealium’s Nick Dennis (RVP, Solution Consulting, APJ) and Anna Koleth (Head of Product & Content Marketing, APJ) highlight the trends and developments in the Asia-Pacific and Japan data privacy landscape. Gain insight into the economic benefits created by recent regulatory developments, and how prioritising privacy can scale growth in a Web 3.0 era. Join us to learn: ● How evolving data privacy regulations are transforming market competition ● Why privacy compliance is now a strategic imperative for brands ● The impacts of key data privacy regulations in the Asia-Pacific and Japan region ● How to cultivate competitive advantage by prioritising privacy ● How technology enables privacy compliance and CX personalisation at scale ● How Kmart increased its consenting customer base by 200% with Tealium CDP
- Fireside chat: Building winning data teams during uncertain times.(Sit-Down) In a global economy that is on the downswing, enterprises need to rethink the structure of their data teams to better define the responsibilities of each member so digital products get to market faster. Organisations that have built a modern and skilled data team will have a clear advantage over those that haven’t as economic growth slows this year. Join Sit-Down’s Director of Research & Production, Byron Connolly, as he chats to highly-experienced data leader, Virginia Wheway about the way she is building a winning data team as Head of Data Strategy at Optiver and how she has applied learnings from previous data leadership roles at organisations such as Koala, Thiess, and BHP. They will discuss: - The roles and responsibilities that make up a modern data team and the skillsets that you absolutely need if your data-led transformation is going to work. - How Virginia is building a data team at Optiver and how she has applied lessons learned in previous roles to her current role. - How she determines which data specialists applying for roles have genuine skills and which ones are potentially padding out their CVs with short course credentials in areas like data science and AI. - Her views on new personas in the marketplace such as data journalist, data storyteller and data artist and whether they hold any weight. - Strategies for securing good data analysts, scientists and engineers in a market that is experiencing a skills crisis where specialists are demanding very high salaries.
- Lunch break & networking(Sit-Down)
- A CX Driven, compliant and transparent use of data with customer's trust in mind(Sit-Down) With the explosion of digital technologies, companies are sweeping up vast quantities of data about consumers’ activities, both online and off. Feeding this trend are new smart, connected products—from fitness trackers to home systems—that gather and transmit detailed information. Though companies are open about their data practices, some prefer to keep consumers in the dark, choose control over sharing, and ask for forgiveness rather than permission. Whilst the cause may be noble to deliver a personalised customer experience that customers ultimately value, the approach has led to a rather distrusting dynamic that could be the make or break in the privacy and CX we strive to deliver as organisations. During this session we get together with Ashwin Sridhar to discuss: The benefits of disruptive technologies that have enabled a personalised experience The important of transparency and trust with the customers in use of data The implications of an ask for forgiveness rather than permission
- Is your data strategy designed to solve business problems?(Sit-Down) Whilst technology is a key enabler to successfully implement a data strategy, the first step we tend to overlook is what we need from our data assets vs. what our current data assets can give us. During this session we look at taking a step back, assessing what a fit for purpose data strategy looks like and designing the roadmap and the measurement points we need to achieve business objectives. Join us as we get together with Oleg Kravets of TTC to dive into: Creating a fit for purpose data strategy Understanding what we need from our data and therefore know what to look for Technology as the last piece of the puzzle once all your ducks are in a row
- Building trust and confidence in your data(Sit-Down) For hipages, Australia’s largest online tradie marketplace, pairing the right tradesperson with the right customer is crucial. And the organisation’s engineers and data specialists need to be able to analyse good quality data to do just that. Join Vincent Koc, head of data at hipages, as he discusses why ensuring data is of the highest quality and employing good data management practices helps hipages build trust with its customers, manage risk, and improve the services that it provides. Vincent will provide insights around: How he has developed a data-driven culture across hipages where data specialists trust the data they are using to identify and create products that customers want. Why self-service data analytics has been good in the past, but it’s now time to deliver more advanced capabilities that support strategic decision making and the creation of products. Methods he uses to get the best out of the team of engineers and data specialists.
- Your data challenges for 2023(Sit-Down) Many enterprises are creating data-driven business models where key decisions are based on integrated data combined from multiple sources rather than just the intuition of their knowledge workers. Other organisations, at the very least, are trying their best to organise and make some sense of data that often sits in silos. What is true is that the way enterprises collect, analyse and leverage data to build products and services for customers will determine their level of competitiveness in an inflated global economy that is expected to be in recession soon. Join Sit-Down’s Director of Research & Production, Byron Connolly, hipages’ Head of Data, Vincent Koc, and Oleg Kravets, Global Head of Data and Analytics at The Travel Corporation as they discuss their data challenges for 2023. Panelists will talk about: The strategies they will use this year to make best use of available data to meet their business objectives and stay competitive in an economy heading for recession. The methods they are using to ensure the data they are using is secure and of the highest quality. How they are breaking down data silos and building a ‘data culture’ across their organisations. How they manage data governance as their applications grow so data is organised and accessible.
