Career

Melody Townsend is a senior customer, marketing and digital executive with more than 25 years of experience driving growth, customer strategy, commercial performance and transformation across complex organisations. Her career spans financial services, ecommerce, transport and logistics, and automotive, with senior leadership roles across BOQ Group, ME Bank, Australia Post and BMW Group.

Melody operates at the intersection of strategy and execution, bringing together customer, product, marketing, digital and operational teams to translate organisational priorities into measurable commercial outcomes. Her experience includes leading multi-brand customer and marketing strategies, digital banking initiatives, customer acquisition and retention programs, product go-to-market, digital engagement and customer experience transformation.

A consistent focus throughout her career has been helping organisations determine where to focus their effort and investment to create the greatest impact. Melody brings a disciplined approach to prioritisation, balancing growth ambition with commercial rigour, customer outcomes and the organisational capability required to execute effectively.

Role at Factor

As an Expert Advisor at Factor, Melody brings more than two decades of senior commercial, customer, marketing and digital leadership experience to executive discussions around growth, customer engagement, transformation and strategy execution.

Her expertise is particularly relevant as organisations move beyond simply acquiring customers and increasingly focus on building deeper, more valuable relationships with existing customers. Melody helps leaders examine how digital experiences can move beyond being a baseline expectation to become a platform for stronger engagement, cross-sell, retention and long-term customer value.

She brings a practical perspective on the relationship between strategy and execution, helping executives identify where customer friction, fragmented priorities or capability gaps are limiting performance. Her cross-functional experience allows her to challenge organisations to look beyond individual functions and consider how product, marketing, digital, distribution and operations need to work together around the customer.

Melody also brings a strong perspective on executive decision-making in an increasingly AI-enabled environment. She believes AI can accelerate access to information and generate increasingly sophisticated answers, but that judgement, problem definition, stakeholder alignment and the ability to challenge assumptions remain essential to good decision-making.

Key roles Melody works with include: Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs), Chief Customer Officers (CCOs), Chief Commercial Officers (CCOs), Chief Growth Officers (CGOs), Chief Digital Officers (CDOs), Chief Product Officers (CPOs), Chief Strategy Officers (CSOs), Marketing & Customer Leaders, and Product, Digital & Transformation Leaders.

Previous Roles

Melody most recently served as General Manager – Group Marketing at Bank of Queensland, where she led group-wide marketing across banking, superannuation, insurance and digital banking. She partnered with senior leaders across retail, business banking, product, distribution and digital platforms to align priorities and support enterprise strategy, with a particular focus on improving customer experience, commercial performance, investment prioritisation and the visibility of marketing ROI.

Previously, Melody was General Manager – Retail Marketing at Bank of Queensland, overseeing retail marketing across a portfolio of brands and products. She worked closely with product, digital platforms and sales distribution to translate strategy into coordinated execution, supporting customer acquisition, digital engagement and retention while strengthening the integration of brand, digital and performance marketing.

Melody spent more than six years at ME Bank, progressing through General Manager – Brand & Marketing, General Manager – Product Marketing and Head of Network Sales & Marketing roles. She led brand, product, customer and go-to-market initiatives across the banking portfolio, modernising customer journeys, embedding personalisation and strengthening the connection between product, marketing, digital and frontline teams. Her work included supporting the launch and growth of digital banking propositions such as ME Go.

Earlier, Melody spent almost four years as Head of Marketing, Parcel & Express Services at Australia Post, leading go-to-market activity across parcel and express services within a large and distributed network. She worked across product, operations, retail and distribution to align customer-facing initiatives across physical and digital channels and embed new initiatives consistently across the frontline network.

Melody began her corporate career with BMW Group Australia, where she spent a decade progressing through retail marketing, CRM, customer acquisition and integrated marketing roles across BMW and MINI. She was a founding member of the MINI Australia launch team, supporting its market entry and early growth through national retail marketing initiatives. She subsequently led customer acquisition and loyalty initiatives across BMW and MINI before moving into integrated marketing leadership.

Her early career began in Formula One motor sport in London, providing an early foundation in performance, precision, teamwork and operating effectively under pressure. Across the subsequent 25 years, she has built on that foundation through senior roles spanning customer strategy, commercial growth, digital transformation and enterprise execution.

Media Presence and Industry Contributions

Melody is an active contributor to conversations around commercial strategy, customer-led growth, digital experience, leadership and the changing nature of work. Through her writing and industry commentary, she explores the practical challenges facing senior leaders as organisations attempt to turn strategy into measurable outcomes.

Her perspectives frequently examine the gap between activity and value creation — challenging leaders to question whether they are investing in the right initiatives, solving the underlying problem or simply becoming better at working around organisational friction. She brings particular attention to customer complaints, process inefficiencies and operational workarounds as potential signals of deeper opportunities for transformation and growth.

Melody also contributes a strong perspective on the human dimensions of leadership and decision-making. She explores how leaders can create better alignment before major decisions, make judgement more visible to their teams and create environments where constructive challenge is encouraged. Her commentary increasingly considers how AI can remove lower-value work while making human judgement, prioritisation and decision quality more important.

Her cross-industry experience across financial services, ecommerce, automotive and transport and logistics gives her a broad understanding of customer behaviour, digital adoption, commercial performance and the organisational realities of delivering transformation at scale.

Leadership Philosophy

Melody believes sustainable growth is rarely achieved by pulling a single lever harder. Organisations create stronger performance when they understand the real constraint, align around the right priorities and coordinate customer, product, digital, marketing and operational capabilities around a common outcome.

She believes leaders need to be disciplined about where they direct organisational energy. That means distinguishing genuine progress from activity, challenging assumptions before committing significant investment and identifying problems that may not yet be urgent but are quietly creating customer friction, cost or lost opportunity.

Melody also believes that digital experience has moved beyond being a differentiator in many industries and is increasingly a basic customer expectation. The next opportunity is using that digital relationship to create deeper engagement, improve retention, increase customer value and build stronger long-term relationships rather than treating digital simply as another acquisition or service channel.

As AI changes how organisations access information and complete routine work, Melody believes the leadership advantage will increasingly sit in judgement. AI can provide answers quickly, but leaders still need to define the right problem, understand context, weigh trade-offs, bring the right people into the conversation and determine which answer is worth acting on.

Her advisory approach combines commercial discipline with customer empathy and practical execution. She helps leaders move from broad strategic ambition to clear priorities, stronger organisational alignment and coordinated action, ensuring that transformation ultimately creates meaningful value for both customers and the business.
