Venkataraman Subramanian is an enterprise architecture and technology executive with more than 25 years of experience across banking, financial services, healthcare and enterprise technology. He has held senior architecture and CTO mandates across Australia and Asia-Pacific, advising executive teams on technology strategy, investment prioritisation, platform modernisation, governance and operating model transformation.
His career has focused on connecting technology architecture with commercial and organisational priorities. He has governed technology landscapes ranging from $200 million to $300 million, delivered a 22% reduction in operating expenditure through disciplined investment prioritisation, modernised critical ERP and EMR platforms, and established architecture governance capabilities that improve the quality and transparency of technology investment decisions.
Venkataraman brings a combination of strategic foresight, operational discipline and technology risk awareness. His experience spans enterprise architecture, technology transformation, SAP and enterprise platforms, digital partnerships, data and analytics, and emerging AI capabilities, giving him a practical perspective on how organisations can modernise while maintaining business continuity and controlling complexity.
Role at Factor
At Factor, Venkataraman provides an executive perspective on how organisations can bring greater strategic discipline to technology architecture and investment. His experience is particularly relevant to organisations where technology estates have become increasingly complex, investment decisions are fragmented, or technology expenditure has outpaced governance maturity.
He can help executives examine the relationship between architecture decisions, cost trajectories, risk exposure and long-term business value. His experience establishing Architecture Review Boards, enterprise architecture repositories and investment prioritisation frameworks provides a practical foundation for discussions around how technology governance can become a strategic rather than administrative capability.
Venkataraman is also well positioned to advise organisations navigating AI-driven technology change. His current consulting work combines enterprise architecture transformation with pragmatic approaches to emerging AI capabilities, helping leaders consider where new technologies genuinely create value, how they fit within existing architecture, and what foundations are required to adopt them sustainably.
Key roles Venkataraman works with include: CIOs, CTOs, Chief Architects, CDAOs, Chief Digital & AI Officers, Chief Transformation Officers, Technology & Architecture Leaders, and Board & Executive Leaders.
Previous Roles
Prior to his current consulting CTO role at CC&C Solutions, Venkataraman served as APAC CTO & Head of Architecture at Vanguard Australia, where he established and repositioned the Enterprise Architecture practice across APAC. He elevated architecture from an engineering support function to an executive advisory capability, established the organisation's first Architecture Review Board and EA repository, and contributed to APAC technology strategy across Product, Legal, Risk and Compliance.
At AIA Australia, Venkataraman was Head of Solution Architecture, strengthening architecture maturity and governance across a $200 million technology landscape. He co-developed technology strategy and investment prioritisation frameworks that reduced operating expenditure by 22%, while leading strategic CRM evaluation and establishing governance forums to improve decision-making across major technology initiatives.
Earlier, as Director Enterprise Architecture at CIMB in Malaysia, he led architecture maturity uplift across the Consumer Banking portfolio within a $300 million technology environment. He implemented an enterprise architecture repository, integrated architecture governance into investment processes, and built and led an architecture leadership team overseeing a $50 million transformation portfolio.
As Group CTO at Columbia Asia Malaysia, Venkataraman led enterprise technology transformation during the expansion of a 23-site hospital network. His work included modernising legacy ERP and EMR platforms, reducing software operating costs by 20%, establishing enterprise data and BI capabilities, and implementing a patient experience platform that contributed to a 20% increase in consumer satisfaction ratings.
Media Presence and Industry Contributions
Venkataraman brings extensive experience translating complex technology architecture into executive-level decisions around investment, risk, cost and business outcomes. His perspective is grounded in large-scale environments where architecture choices have direct implications for capital allocation, operational resilience and organisational competitiveness.
His experience establishing formal architecture governance capabilities, including Architecture Review Boards, EA repositories and investment integration, provides practical insight into how organisations can move architecture beyond documentation and into a meaningful executive decision-making discipline.
Through his current consulting work, Venkataraman also brings an advisory perspective on the impact of AI and emerging technology on enterprise architecture. He focuses on pragmatic adoption, resilient technology strategies and ensuring new capabilities are aligned to genuine business requirements rather than technology trends alone.
Leadership Philosophy
Venkataraman views technology architecture as a strategic business capability rather than an engineering function. The strongest architecture decisions connect technology choices to business strategy, investment priorities, risk appetite and the organisation's long-term direction.
He advocates for disciplined technology investment, with governance frameworks that create clarity around where organisations should invest, what should be modernised, and how competing priorities should be sequenced. For him, effective governance is about ensuring investment creates sustainable value without introducing unnecessary complexity or risk.
His leadership approach combines strategic foresight with operational discipline and risk awareness. He believes technology leaders must be able to challenge assumptions, create clarity for executives and boards, and translate complex architecture decisions into practical choices that support business performance and long-term competitiveness.
